AsylumConnect Condemns Violence at the U.S. Capitol
AsylumConnect unequivocally condemns the recent violence at the U.S. Capitol. Anti-democratic violence and white supremacy have no place anywhere, including the United States.
Every year, thousands of asylum seekers and refugees arrive in the United States in pursuit of a better life. Over the past four years, the Trump administration’s racist, xenophobic, homophobic and transphobic actions have tarnished this image of the U.S. as a much-needed safe harbor for those fleeing persecution. The insurrection at the Capitol is an unwelcome manifestation of the damage this administration has inflicted on the country. During 2021, we urge the Biden-Harris administration to begin the crucial restoration of the U.S. to a nation embodying the values of liberty, equality and justice.
AsylumConnect is dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ people who have been forced to flee their home countries because of who they are or who they love. Many turn to the United States as a beacon of hope, safety, democracy and justice. The recent anti-democratic and racist violence displayed at the U.S. Capitol flies in the face of these ideals. We join the calls for a peaceful transition of power to the Biden-Harris administration and look forward to the U.S. returning to a place of decency and refuge under a more inclusive administration.
